Todd Bentley and the "Angel" Emma Deception

Let me preface what I am going to say with my background. I am a college graduate and 1 credit short of my Masters in Religious Arts with an emphasis on the New Testament. I have a diploma in practical theology from Christ for the Nations.

Now, with that I come to Todd Bentley and his angel "Emma." Lets start with the obvious question, is it real or an illusion? I believe it is genuine, BUT I would question its origin. To put it bluntly, I fear that Todd Bentley has given way to a demon. If you will allow me, I will present my case.

Emma was a woman....Not in the Bible. There were never any female angels. That is Hollywood that makes them all females.

Emma has a name....In the New Testament it was not that way. In fact, in going through the Old Testament there were only a few MALE angels with names.

Emma teaches "doctrine"...Again, nope. [TBC: The apostle Paul warned, "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:8). A similar warning is issued in 2 Corinthians 11:14, "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light."

Todd Bentley and Bob Jones agree on Emma looking like Kathyn Kuhlman, and floating above ground. In fact, Bob Jones is the one who brought Emma to the Charismatic community. Apparently he says that Emma is the one who has released the prophetic in Kansas City. The odd thing that he says is that Emma is "nurturing." What does that mean? Are these men with mommy issues manifesting a seducing demon in their life?

They say that Emma is 22, but old and wise. Apparently Emma also has gold and dispenses on the body of Christ as proof that God has cash.

You know, the idea that people have believed that Emma is an angel is yet more proof that the Word of God is taking second place in the Charismatic community to "manifestations" and shows.

It would seem that Bob Jones was the first to see Emma in the 1980s. This is Todd's version of the events. I will interject in bold with my thoughts.

“Now let me talk about an angelic (demonic) experience with Emma. Twice Bob Jones (Yet another charismatic leader) asked me about this angel that was in Kansas City in 1980: “Todd, have you ever seen the angel by the name of Emma?” He asked me as if he expected that this angel was appearing to me. Surprised, I said, “Bob, who is Emma?” He told me that Emma was the angel that helped birth and start the whole prophetic movement in Kansas City in the 1980s. She was a mothering-type angel that helped nurture the prophetic as it broke out. Within a few weeks of Bob asking me about Emma, I was in a service in Beulah, North Dakota. In the middle of the service I was in conversation with Ivan and another person when in walks Emma. (Seems that Bob Jones planted the idea and Satan acted on a believing spirit) As I stared at the angel with open eyes, the Lord (Satan, Angel of Light)said, “Here’s Emma.” I’m not kidding. She floated a couple of inches off the floor. It was almost like Kathryn Khulman (demon trying to manifest the deepest desires of his heart) in those old videos when she wore a white dress and looked like she was gliding across the platform. Emma appeared beautiful and young-about 22 years old-but she was old at the same time. She seemed to carry the wisdom, virtue and grace of Proverbs 31 on her life.

She glided into the room, emitting brilliant light and colors. Emma carried these bags and began pulling gold out of them. Then, as she walked up and down the aisles of the church, she began putting gold dust on people. “God, what is happening?” I asked. The Lord answered: “She is releasing the gold, which is both the revelation and the financial breakthrough that I am bringing into this church. I want you to prophecy that Emma showed up in this service-the same angel that appeared in Kansas city-as a sign that I am endorsing and releasing a prophetic spirit in the church.” See, when angels come, they always come for a reason; we need to actually ask God what the purpose is. Within three weeks of that visitation, the church had given me the biggest offering I had ever received to that point in my ministry. Thousands of dollars! Thousands! Even though the entire community consisted of only three thousand people, weeks after I left the church the pastor testified that the church offerings had either doubled or tripled.

During this visitation the pastor’s wife (it was an AOG church) got totally whacked by the Holy Ghost- she began running around barking like a dog or squawking like a chicken (Would Jesus act this way?) as a powerful prophetic spirit came on her. Also, as this prophetic anointing came on her, she started getting phone numbers of complete strangers and calling them up on the telephone and prophesying over them. She would tell them that God gave her their telephone number and then would give them words of knowledge. Complete strangers. Then angels started showing up in the church.”

My thoughts:
If this angel Emma was of God there would have been a change. The only change Todd Bentley speaks of the personally benefited him in a financial way. And, People jerking like chickens, can you seriously believe that God is in that? It would seem that a psychic spirit came on her, and as we all know that is not from God. Todd Bentley claims this woman knew numbers and called them with words of knowledge, but note in all the above he does not mention Jesus once, and Lord only once. How can Jesus be taken out of the equation of bringing people to Him? Simple, this movement that Todd Bentley belongs to is obsessed with the supernatural realm. They seek for Jesus through feelings, touches, and manifestations. They tell people that if they don't "feel" God's presence then something is wrong. Could it be that the opposite is true? I am all for the Holy Spirit pouring himself out or whatever, but the test of the Holy Spirit should not be in a feeling, but in change.

The fruit of Todd Bentley's encounters with Emma has been drunkeness, adultery, and deception. If it is true that you can transfer things to other people through the laying on of hands, then we need to pray for the innocent people who may have opened themself up to deception or confusion.

Thankyou! Or, perhaps, thanks to the Lord, for these thoughts. Not because the words correspond to my own thoughts but because they have their roots in the Word of God.
And, as you say, let us pray for all the people personally envolved in this.

You write: "Emma was a woman....Not in the Bible. There were never any female angels."

Yes, there are female angels in the Bible. Zechariah 5:9 says: "Then I looked up--and there before me were two women, with the wind in their wings! They had wings like those of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between heaven and earth."

You write: "Emma teaches "doctrine"...Again, nope. The apostle Paul warned, "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:8)."

This verse does not say that angels cannot teach doctrine, but rather that they must not preach any other gospel than the one Paul and his company have preached.
