If I Can Stop by Emily Dickinson

2 comments
I ran across this poem that seemed to sum up what I want my life to be about. It is called "If I Can Stop" by Emily Dickinson.

IF I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

This resonates with me because the more time I spend talking to people I am finding a hurting humanity. People going through stuff that you can't even fathom. I am also finding many who are struggling with loneliness. They don't have the relationships in their life where they can be themselves or share what's on their heart. It seems studies are baring this out. The study claimed that 25 percent of people have no close friends at all and the majority only have 2.

In this world where everyone is so connected technologically,  I have to wonder why that is. Is it that people don't give credence to online relationships, people have been so wounded in their relationships that they can't reach out, or people are just too busy to connect on an intimate level?

I think it is a combination of all of the above. Relationships take time to build regardless of whether it's in person or online. There are no short cuts. So in the meantime, if meeting people helps them have one small connection in the world, then I will do it. And no, my life has never been in vain and neither has yours.

Whatever you are, be a good one. - Abraham Lincoln

Interesting running into your post, I just came across this post with a similar theme.

Building and forging deeper relationships is definitely something that doesn't come naturally to me. I have to make an active effort in keeping in contact with many. You said it right though, it takes time and there are no shortcuts.
